Be@rbrick
Medicom's Be@rbricks blurs the line between toy and art, standing as a testament to creativity and collaboration. With groundbreaking partnerships with artists, designers, and musicians, it has redefined the world of collectible toys. From KAWS to BAPE to Karl Lagerfeld, these collaborations have resulted in some of the most coveted and valuable toys ever created.
The credit for Bearbrick's inception goes to Medicom's founder, Tatsuhiko Akashi. Established in 1996, Medicom made waves in the collectible scene with the Kubrick—a figurine with clever pop-cultural references (Lego inspired). However, it was a special request for the 2001 World Character Convention that led to Bearbrick's creation. Faced with logistical hurdles, Akashi ingeniously modified Medicom's flagship toy, giving birth to the iconic bear-headed figurine.
While the original Bearbrick measured 70 mm, today it comes in sizes ranging from 35 mm (50%) to a staggering 700 mm (1000%). Collecting a complete series is no small feat, as Bearbricks are released biannually in limited runs and sold in randomly distributed "blind boxes," making rare models exceptionally hard to find. For dedicated collectors, the resale market offers the best chance of acquiring sought-after editions, with values soaring for the most desirable toys.
