Two of Murakami’s signature motifs meet in this black and white print: his iconic smiling flower and the skull, a recurring theme in his work since the early 2000s. Without his usual bright colours, the image takes on a darker tone, mixing cheerful pop imagery with the symbolism of death.
The print was released at ComplexCon, a major event in Long Beach, California, bringing together streetwear, music and contemporary art. Murakami was its first artistic director from 2016 to 2019, creating the event’s visual identity.
The edition was produced by Kaikai Kiki, Murakami’s Tokyo based studio, founded in 2001. ComplexCon releases are limited editions, available only during the event.
Each print bears the Kaikai Kiki embossed stamp, used to authenticate the work in place of a hand signature.
